In Finland, all sizable municipal water storage tanks are built of concrete. Steel is not used because of its relatively high cost, its tendency to corrode, and the fact that it is normal European practice to use concrete. This article discusses the variations in form that are used for elevated reinforced and prestressed concrete distribution storage reservoirs in Finland and describes how the tanks are protected from the cold winters.
