This article provides a brief overview of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and its standards for water utility equipment, materials, and procedures, which form a significant body of work produced by the Association. Early standardization efforts are described, along with the process used by AWWA for developing and approving standards, AWWA's efforts at actively cooperating in the standardization work of other organizations, its responsibility for international work, and the significance of standardization in the water utility industry.
