In a recent Journal AWWA article, John T. O'Connor and Charles E. Renn draw attention to the effect of pH on cation adsorption by river silts. The authors assert that the “empirical” Freundlich isotherm may be used to describe the adsorption, and that this equation provides no expression of the pH dependence for the adsorption process. As the comments made below by G. C. Bratt of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia, Ltd., Risdon, Tasmania indicate, the Freundlich equation is not empirical and may be used to determine the pH dependence of adsorption.
