This article discusses the effectiveness of a microstrainer installed in 1960 at the Ilion, New York, water treatment plant. Actual operation of the microstrainer began in February 1962. The microstrainer was installed to pretreat water before slow sand filtration, and results showed a reduction in the frequency of cleaning the filters.
