This article discusses a project to study the validity and significance of the carbon adsorption method (CAM). Specific objectives of the study were to: determine the reproducibility of results; measure the efficiency of the method; evaluate the carbon blank and the blank correction; arrive at an optimum sampling technique; and, reach general conclusions on the applicability of the CAM. A commercial activated carbon was used exclusively as the packing, with the flow rate at 1 gpm. Samples were collected from a raw‐water holding reservoir (900‐mil gal capacity), which is indirectly filled with Sacramento River water. Two types of sampling arrangements were set up – five carbon columns were connected in series, the other columns were arranged in parallel.
