This article discusses a seawater conversion study that the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) conducted in collaboration with the federal government. The study objective was the development of a preliminary design for the first really big desalting plant that would use atomic fuel as a source of heat, and would also be the first dual‐purpose plant to produce large quantities of electric power.
