H.N. Smith questions several statements of fact and opinion in a recent JOURNAL article (“Effects of Conservation Techniques on Yield,” August 1964), by Uel Stephens. Smith states that the article was slanted toward disavowing the need for soil conservation. No mention was made of such beneficial effects as the reduction of sediment in downstream reservoirs. Aside from this general objection, Smith comments on several specific statements made by Uel Stephens.
