This article discusses a long‐range experimental program by the research department of the Philadelphia Suburban Water Company on the possibilities of the new concept of multiple‐bed filters. This consisted first of laboratory experiments using glass column filters and then, following the excellent results obtained in the laboratory, a rebuilding of one of the standard filters at the company's Crum Creek plant. The results of nearly a year's operation with the two experimental filters were so encouraging that it was decided to rebuild all 22 filters at the Pickering Creek plant. The renovation program, which was begun in December 1963 and completed in February 1964, consisted of removing all existing sand and gravel from the filters and replacing them with new gravel, sand, and anthracite coal as previously described. It also included installation of a polyelectrolyte aid system.
