This article discusses the National Board of Fire Underwriters (NBFU) standards that cover fire departments, fire alarm systems, fire prevention, and building departments, in addition to water supply. The article discusses how the NBFU insures that any standard revisions needed are made in accordance with recognized modern engineering practice. The first edition of the grading schedule was submitted to qualified water supply engineers and fire protection authorities for their approval, and attention to outside suggestions from municipal officials, individual engineers, fire chiefs, and organizations interested in municipal fire protection, has helped to develop and maintain quality fire protection standards.
