This paper begins with an overview of the periodic recurrence of objectionable tastes and odors in public water supplies that use lakes and streams as sources of water. The discharge of industrial and domestic wastes into water courses has further aggravated the problem. The paper discusses in detail two studies on the formation of taste and odor in Deer Creek Reservoir in Utah and Lake Viva Naughton, Wyoming.
