This article stresses the importance of utility training programs, and presents the apprenticeship program at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power as an example of providing excellent on‐the‐job training at the journeyman skill‐level. Other aspects of the L.A. Department of Water and Power training program are discussed, including the radiologic monitor training, customer service training, tuition reimbursement, orientation program, supervisory training, management development, and operating manuals.
