This article provides an economic evaluation of the cost of accidents to the water industry. The article calculates the “severity rate,” or days of work lost per million man‐hours worked, which is the standard by which the costs of accidents are appraised. The results of a safety program instituted in the Richmond, Virginia, Department of Public Utilities are discussed.
