This article describes a relatively simple system for evaluating the contamination potential of areas where wastes are released in loose granular earth at or near ground surface. The system is based on characterizing a “problem site” in terms of the probable effect of five environmental factors on contaminants released near the site. The system is especially suitable for a quick initial appraisal of sites where geologic and hydrologic data are scarce. Use of the system requires some knowledge of the kinds of wastes involved, the methods of disposal, the general behavior of contaminants in the ground, and the geologic factors that control the movement.
