This article relates some of the author's experiences of the past 25 years that bear on safety in order to inspire others to be more active in making their utilities safer places to work in. The article focuses on maintenance of a utility's automotive fleet as one of the most important phases of a safety program. The objectives and administrative responsibility of a motor vehicle maintenance program are presented, along with committee inspection of the fleet, provision of proper vehicle safety equipment, an employee training program, driver physical fitness, accident reports, recognition of safe drivers, the importance of drivers' records, costs of accidents, effect of safety on public relations, and off‐the‐job safety.
