This article discusses the AWWA safety program, which is centered in the Safety Practices Committee that works closely with an active safety committee in each section. The basic elements of the program are: gathering data on disabling injuries to chart the industry's progress in safety; giving awards in recognition of utilities that have established outstanding records or made notable progress in the reduction of disabling injuries; and, distributing safety information to stimulate and help utilities establish safe operations. The article includes the Water Utility Safety Report Form that collects information on injury statistics that indicate the safety position of the water industry. Statistics are provided on Utility Safety Reports for the years 1960 – 1962, along with statistics for Section Safety Awards, 1957 – 1962. The article mentions the 1955 AWWA Manual, Safety Practice for Water Utilities, which provides safety information focused on the needs of the industry, including recommendations for safe working practices in all phases of operation and maintenance.
