This article begins by discussing the accidental pollution of ground and surface waters with commercial fertilizers, which is of considerable concern to health authorities mostly because of the high application rates of nitrate‐nitrogen to the soils. The presence of ABS (alkyl benzene sulfonate, a widely used surfactant or sudsing factor in synthetic detergents) in the water supply is discussed, particularly the foaming in tap water.
