This article reports on research conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey to improve techniques for the separation, identification, and measurement of natural organic compounds in water. This research involves continuous liquid‐liquid extraction and vacuum evaporation of water samples from unpolluted streams. Gas chromatographic techniques are described that are convenient and sensitive enough to permit the characterization of carboxylic acids. This method can also be used for the determination of other organic substances in water.
