This article discusses ion exchange in municipal water treatment, hardness reduction and the removal of iron and manganese. In particular, this paper discusses the cation resin operating on the sodium cycle in the softening process, and in the iron and manganese removal process. A brief overview is presented of a case history of iron removal by ion exchange on the sodium cycle at an industrial plant in Camden, New Jersey.
