This study examined the influence of the presence of sodium thiosulfate on the survival of coliform organisms in samples of untreated lake water. Storage periods and temperatures were selected to represent some of the conditions encountered in a routine laboratory operating daily on one 8‐hr shift. The basic experimental unit was repeated 5 days of nearly every week from Jul. 1, 1951 to Jun. 30, 1962 – 215 sampling days – to insure that a full seasonal temperature cycle of the source water was represented by the samples obtained. Thus the experiment's objectives were met by one experimental design, and this assured the comparability of each of seven series of data gathered during the year.
