This article discusses general information applicable to the operation and maintenance of centrifugal pumps. Under the subject of operation, topics covered include: suction conditions; priming; starting and operation; and, stopping pumps. Under the subject of lubrication and cleaning, topics covered include: grease‐lubricated antifriction bearings; regular grease change; regular lubrication; oil‐lubricated antifriction bearings; oil change; constant‐level oil control; coupling lubrication; complete cleaning during a major overhaul; and, repacking bearings and housings.
