This article discusses the effects of physical and chemical characteristics on aquatic life in rivers in the southern and eastern parts of the U.S. Topics discussed include: the importance of aquatic life in a river; the effect of the physical and chemical characteristics of a river on the human use of a river without serious harm to aquatic life; and, the effect of these characteristics on the ways in which aquatic life indicate the consequences of municipal and industrial wastes.
