This article discusses the necessity of preventing the contamination of water resources, and suggests widening the scope of considerations for the production of safe water supplies. A survey of areas of contamination of water reserves is discussed, and based on survey responses from 36 states and the U.S. Public Health Service, the need for an adequate preventive program was recognized. Survey results are presented under the following topics: cases of surface water contamination; cases of groundwater contamination; frequent contamination causes; and, causes of groundwater and surface water contamination. A master plan for preventing the contamination of water resources on a nationwide basis is discussed, along with necessary elements of the master plan, including: laws, rules, and regulations; personnel; well‐drilling codes; plumbing codes; standards; new product control; research and development; and, teamwork.
