This article begins by providing a brief overview of the importance of the Great Lakes as a water source. Various uses of Great Lakes water are discussed, along with pollution of the Great Lakes and a potential survey by the U.S. Public Health Service of pollution in Lake Michigan and the Illinois River, with possible expansion of the survey to include all of the Great Lakes in a 6‐year program.
