The municipal water utility in Santa Fe, New Mexico, had to enforce substantial mandatory restrictions in 2002 to meet peak day water demands. The city developed a long‐range plan to provide a reliable, sustainable water supply for current and future customers. At a time when many other Southwest communities face increasing water needs, Santa Fe's long‐range planning method can serve as an integrated, community‐based planning model. Santa Fe's process sought to take advantage of both surface water supplies and groundwater sources and optimize resources, conservation programs, and infrastructure.
