This article discusses how the goals for implementing a GIS in a small to medium‐sized community should be approached from a different perspective. The article discusses a few key steps to follow when planning a GIS that works within budget, provides the same functionality as one designed for a big‐city department at a fraction of the cost, is housed on‐site, and is operated by city staff. Customizing the system, fine tuning data accumulation, performing in‐house maintenance, and educating stakeholders are key components to a successful system.
