This month's question asks about systemwide flushing programs. The article discusses the importance of a powerful distribution system flushing program for improving water quality. Three types of flushing programs are discussed (conventional, unidirectional, and automatic), along with three strategies for flushing: reactive spot flushing, localized stagnant area flushing, and systemwide regular flushing. The design of a regular flushing program should be based upon the particular strategy chosen for a system. The article provides an insert that lists systemwide flushing tips.
