This article begins with a listing of automated meter reading (AMR) benefits over traditional meter reading, and goes on to present the Long Beach Water Department's AMR program as an example of a successful automated meter reading program. The utility implemented a fixed‐network AMR system that operates as a mesh network, and includes a basic Web interface to view data in real‐time that allows the utility to set options for generating notifications and alerts.
