This article discusses strategies that deal with worker differences, including: become an employer of choice by working with high schools to offer apprenticeships, mentoring and training to attract and engage teenagers; coach employees on interpersonal skills and the distinctive culture of utilities in general and each utility specifically; identify flexible work options such as flextime, telecommuting, and job‐sharing, “leave banks”, and on‐site child care; gather data on perceptions and preferences of key groups throughout the hiring cycle, and use data as marketing tools; and, conduct follow‐up by periodically reviewing knowledge management, generational differences, and teamwork.
