This article describes how to optimally control filters to strike the right balance among chemical feeds, loading rates, and other operational parameters to meet finished water quality goals. The article discusses common practices that can help operators optimize filtration, including: develop formal procedures and establish goals; establish a surveillance program; diagnose the worst filter run; develop a log sheet; use filter‐to‐waste (FTW); maintain constant loading; track daily maximum turbidity; and, optimize backwash.
