This article discusses the benefits of implementing a cross‐connection control program. The article first defines cross‐connection, backflow and backsiphonage and discusses the hazards that could potentially occur from these incidents. Statistics on cases of contamination caused by cross‐connections are provided, focusing on the states of Louisiana, New Jersey, and Missouri. Backflow prevention devices are discussed, along with the critical elements of implementing an effective cross‐connection control program. The article discusses the importance of balancing resources when determining which implementation strategy to use, and the variations in different state‐ and federally‐sponsored cross‐connection control programs.
