This article discusses the first AWWA standard, Standard Specifications for Cast Iron Pipe and Special Castings, published on May 12, 1908. The article provides a brief history of cast iron pipe used in water service, including how it was made, and discusses the need at that time for a uniformly dependable product. The article tells how the standard was developed, starting with AWWA's Annual Conference in 1886 in Denver, Colorado, and concerns about water hammer, to AWWA's 1889 Annual Conference where three men were appointed to draft a “standard series of pipes”. After years of consensus‐building, Standard C100 was published in 1908 and remained unchanged until the 1950s.
