This article discusses an innovative approach to bromate treatment used by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), called “shade balls” which keep bromide and chlorine from reacting with sunlight. LADWP covered three of its open‐air posttreatment reservoirs, that were found to have elevated levels of bromate, with millions of 4 inch black, high‐density polyethylene vapor control balls. These shade balls prevented bromate formation by shading the reservoir water from sunlight.
