This article discusses how the Region of Peel fought to stem the tide of growing demand on its water and wastewater infrastructure by implementing a comprehensive water‐efficiency program to inspire residents to get involved and save water. The article describes the services and programs delivered by Water Smart Peel that are aimed at increasing local awareness of water‐ and wastewater‐related issues through educational initiatives that encourage students, residents, and businesses to protect water and reduce daily water use. The Region of Peel developed a Water Efficiency Plan (WEP) to promote more effective water use without negatively affecting service levels. Specific objectives of the WEP are given, along with screening criteria for potential water efficiency measures, WEP initiatives such as the toilet replacement program, the water audit‐capacity buy‐back program, outdoor water education program, and restaurant spray‐valve replacement program. The Region of Peel's public education and outreach programs are also presented.
