This article discusses a new method used by Consolidated Water Services (CWS), located in Centralia, Illinois, for increasing the efficiency of water main flushing. It involved placing five automatic hydrant‐flushers at strategic points on the outskirts of the distribution system. The article details how the automatic hydrant‐flushers work, the benefits of changing the time of flushing to the early morning hours, how it reduced the flushing time done upstream, and allowed for greater certainty in bacteriological sampling due to increased disinfectant levels throughout the distribution system.
