This article discusses an effort by the San Diego Water Department to forecast replacement and refurbishment (R&R) costs and analyze funding options. A capital asset management system (CAMS) was used, along with the department's existing asset database, to provide ongoing analysis as the department's asset knowledge improved. The basic principles of CAMS are discussed, along with its versatile functionality, reporting capabilities and long‐term performance.
