Many utilities are converting their paper maps to electronic formats so they can be used by a geographic information system (GIS), a powerful computer‐based technology that can capture, store, analyze, and display geographically referenced information, also known as “spatial information,” defining where assets are located in space. The article describes how GIS works and how it is used to overlay maps with different types of information, and its many other applications that help utilities improve facility planning, management, operation, and maintenance.
