This article discusses maintaining raw water quality in areas that are difficult to treat and optimizing procedures for ensuring effective use of each unit process employed by their treatment facilities. Particular interest is focused on small water systems for being the most at risk for noncompliance and public health issues in raw water quality. The article discusses treatment considerations such as disinfectant demand, ongoing process control testing, monitoring coagulation chemistry through observation and jar‐testing procedures, and assessing filters.
