This article discusses how staff at Tipton (Indiana) Municipal Utilities reduced costly and time‐consuming leak repairs at service line connections by adding a corrosion inhibitor that consisted of 80% orthophosphate and 20% polyphosphate. Coupon corrosion rates have decreased from 8.37 mil/yr, based on samples taken in March 1993, to 3.18 mil/yr in April 2004. The article discusses unexpected leak repairs and the switch to chloramination for disinfection in 2001.
