This article gives a brief history of cast‐iron pipe (CIP) use, and explains how in the mid‐1950s ductile‐iron pipe (DIP) was introduced and has been used to replace old CIP and subsequently construct new lines. The article lists the DIP characteristics, explains how it is manufactured, outlines the evolution of cement‐mortar lining. The Ductile Iron Pipe Research Association (DIPRA) is mentioned as participating in AWWA Standards‐writing bodies, conducts and publishes research, and provides technical assistance. A listing of AWWA Standards and Manuals for Ductile Iron Pipe is given. A side‐bar column discusses ductile‐iron pipe's resistance to corrosion.
