This article discusses a case study where South Bend (Indiana) Water Works (SBWW) suffered four broken valves on a 24‐in. water main all at once. SBWW decided on the line‐stop method of installing a temporary valve to isolate a section of the water main which would limit the number of customers without water service. The line‐stop method is described, along with contingencies and conflicts that occurred during the effort.
