This month's question concerns heterotrophic bacteria and techniques that are used to test for heterotrophic bacteria in a drinking water sample. Three techniques are discussed for enumerating heterotrophic bacteria that include: pour plate; spread plate; and, membrane filtration. Several combinations of incubation times and temperatures are discussed for the recovery of heterotrophic bacteria. Advantages and disadvantages for heterotrophic plate count are given.
