This article discusses the four basic membrane processes: microfiltration; ultrafiltration; nanofiltration; and, hyperfiltration (better known as reverse osmosis). Two common forms of membrane configuration are also discussed, flat sheet and hollow fiber, along with the effectiveness of membranes for removing contaminants.
