This article discusses how information about the condition of filters and effectiveness of backwashing procedures can be obtained with simple tools that are readily available at every utility or obtainable at minimal cost. A listing of the general equipment needed is given along with tips for creating additional tools. By using these techniques to modify wash cycles, one treatment plant was able to reduce the amount of wash water used per wash by 38 percent. The improved backwashing protocol also decreased the ripening period. A filter inspection program that includes tests described in this article and performed on a regular basis, can aid a utility in maximizing the performance of its filters and identifying problems.
