This article discusses the new standard‐setting process mandated by the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) amendments. The contaminant candidate list (CCL) process is discussed and the article explains how this process relates to water utilities and the role played by the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR). The UCMR is divided into three lists that include an assessment survey, a screening survey, and prescreen testing. The unique requirements of the UCMR include the fact that utilities must report their data directly to the US Environmental Protection Agency for compliance purposes, and the data is required to be reported via the Internet.
