This article discusses the experience that the Chanute, Kansas, water plant had with fouling their anthracite and rapid sand filters. Biofilm and mineral buildup was discovered. Samples were taken to determine the extent of fouling and also to determine the proper cleaning chemicals to use. Several dispersant chemicals were selected for cleaning and it was found that laboratory analysis proved to be a valuable tool since it provided the extent and composition of media fouling.
