This article discusses operator certification and lists the minimum guidelines recommended by the US Environmental Protection Agency for developing and implementing state programs for certification. Grandparenting, training, and reciprocity are discussed along with a partial list of “need‐to‐know” criteria for very small water systems. A state‐by‐state listing of drinking water certification contacts is given.
