After a 1993 county toxic gas ordinance required San Jose Water Company to switch from gaseous chlorine to sodium hypochlorite for disinfection at its wellfields, they experienced serious scaling problems. A change in their dosing apparatus effectively solved the scaling problem and there was a substantial reduction in maintenance costs and a major improvement in operations characteristics.
