This article discusses whether there is a future for small water systems in light of the Groundwater Disinfection Rule, Microbial/Disinfection Byproducts Rule, and Capacity Development Provisions. The following topics are addressed: the changing role of small systems; the importance of adaptation; consumer confidence in water quality; and, the Safe Drinking Water Act amendments as they relate to small water systems. “Elements of a Water System Plan for Very Small Systems” are listed.
