The Jersey City Water Treatment Facility is a traditional 80‐mgd surface water treatment plant. The plant's sedimentation basins are equipped with plastic tube settlers to help increase settling efficiency. Over the years, sunlight, ice and overly aggressive cleaning techniques have deteriorated and damaged the plastic tube settlers. As a result, pieces of plastic commonly break off whenever the tube settlers are cleaned and can clog downstream piping. This article discusses how one of the plant's maintenance technicians used milk carton‐style crates to strain out any pieces of plastic or other debris.
