With the passage of the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act amendments, the federal government will, for the first time, set minimum standards for operator certification and recertification on a nationwide level. An operator certification work group has been established under the National Drinking Water Advisory Council (NDWAC) to provide advice, recommendations, and development assistance to USEPA. This article contains a listing of the USEPA's deadlines for developing operator certification guidelines and a brief discussion on how the regulation will impact state programs.
